Two recent exes with an undeniable connection confront what could have been if their cultural differences hadn't pushed them to new lives on opposite coasts.
SYNOPSIS
Keir, the only black male in his California art school, is struggling. He has an offer for his dream job and his friend-with-benefits is finally single, but all he can think about is his ex-girlfriend Jade. On the East Coast, as Jade and her family prepare for a wedding in their tight-knit Indian community, a message from Keir makes her question everything.
As both come to a crossroads in their separate lives, Keir and Jade must decide if their relationship is worth a second chance, and what they’re willing to give up to renew it. FEEL LIKE GHOSTS explores a long-distance interracial romance in three discrete acts: his story, her story, and their past together.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
This film started as a short script that I hoped to shoot for fun with my grad school friends while we were waiting to graduate. When I started it, I thought I was writing about post-art school angst, kind of poking fun at it, but also languishing in it. By the time I finished the short I realized it was actually about still being in love with my ex-girlfriend. So while the film isn’t autobiographical, it’s definitely personal.
I ended up resuming the long-distance relationship I had with my ex, but as we tried to come together everything got harder than it was before we broke up. I found myself wondering what it was like for her on the other side of the country and what it’d been like when we were apart. The feature grew out of that time. I was looking at our past, trying to figure out our future, hoping to find a sign that things would go differently. But there were none. FEEL LIKE GHOSTS is a story that doesn’t start at the beginning, and doesn’t end at the end. Because relationships never start at the beginning. Each person brings a world of expectations and hurt to even the first encounter. Break ups are the same. They’re not about the moment they happen, but about the thousand moments before that didn’t go the way we’d expected. Moments that have nothing to do with the partner. Moments that left us feeling alienated, ashamed, or unable to ask for more from ourselves or others. Separated by distance, our characters failed to make things work, but are also failing to move on without each other. They’re two outsiders alone and in love. Now that they find themselves tempted by a reunion, they have hopes of breaking the cycle and beginning anew. ...but can they? -Kali Baker-Johnson |
